Role Summary:
  • The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will serve as a senior executive leader responsible for shaping and overseeing Sharing Excess's financial strategy and execution, in coordination with the Leadership Team.
  • Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the CFO will lead the organization’s accounting, reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and overall financial health. The CFO will provide guidance and oversight to the finance team, ensuring the organization’s financial operations and budgets are efficient, compliant, and aligned with organizational goals. 
  • In addition, the CFO will work closely with the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and other key stakeholders to manage risk, develop long-term fundraising and revenue strategies, and ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of Sharing Excess.

 
Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Leadership:

  • Develop and execute Sharing Excess’s financial strategy to support organizational goals, ensuring alignment with the overall mission of the organization.
  • Provide high-level oversight of the finance team, ensuring that financial operations and budgets are efficient, transparent, and compliant with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Lead long-term financial planning, including the creation of annual budgets, multi-year forecasts, and scenario planning.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board to advise on financial strategies, budgets, funding needs, and potential financial risks.
  • Develop strategies for growth, sustainability, and diversification of revenue streams, ensuring financial health over the long term. Including strategy with grants and earned revenue proposals.
  • Oversee all accounting and bookkeeping functions, supporting audit compliance, grant tracking, and providing monthly and year-to-date cash flow analysis.
  • Ensure all accounts payable and receivable are managed accurately and efficiently.

Governance & Risk Management:

  • Establish and implement internal controls and governance frameworks to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Manage financial risk, including assessments of potential financial threats and opportunities, and make recommendations to mitigate risks.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, grant requirements, nonprofit standards, and tax laws.
  • Oversee audit preparation and execution, collaborating with external auditors to confirm organizational transparency and financial compliance.

Reporting & Analysis:

  • Provide regular financial performance reports, key financial metrics, and analysis to the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and funders.
  • Monitor the organization’s cash flow, preparing forecasts for future financial needs and optimizing reserves.
  • Analyze financial performance to identify areas for cost savings, revenue enhancement, and operational efficiencies.
  • Conduct financial risk assessments and recommend strategies for mitigating risks, including potential impacts from changing regulations or market conditions.

Strategic Partnerships & Development Support:

  • Work closely with the Development team to align financial goals with funding strategies, ensuring that financial planning supports the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Provide financial due diligence and guidance for new partnerships, funding opportunities, and program initiatives, ensuring sound financial management.
  • Advise on the financial viability and sustainability of new programs, products, and projects, collaborating with other executive team members and stakeholders.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Mentor and guide the Finance Director, helping them build expertise in strategic financial management and policy development.
  • Encourage continuous professional development within the finance team and create an environment that supports learning, accountability, and growth.
  • Promote a high-performance culture within the finance team, ensuring that all members are motivated, productive, and feel connected to the organization’s mission.


Qualifications:

  • Proven experience (10+ years) in senior-level financial leadership, with a focus on nonprofit financial management.
  • CPA required.
  • Strong experience in financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
  • Extensive knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices, financial reporting, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience managing and leading a finance team, with the ability to mentor and develop financial talent.
  • Proficient in financial management software, accounting systems, and Excel or similar data analysis tools.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to provide clear insights into financial data and translate complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience managing audits, risk management, and working with external auditors.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with senior leaders, Board members, funders, and other key stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity, transparency, and professionalism in managing organizational finances.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, adapting to the organization’s evolving financial needs and challenges.


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $105,00-$120,000 - commensurate with experience.

Work Location:
This position is based in Philadelphia, PA, with a hybrid work schedule. Occasional travel for meetings, audits, or events may be required.
