Job Description

Rabbi and Senior Jewish Educator

North Carolina Hillel

Role Overview

North Carolina Hillel is looking for its first statewide Rabbi and Senior Jewish Educator to enrich the lives of Jewish students and shape the future of Jewish life across the 8 campuses of NC Hillel. As a visionary educational and spiritual leader, the Rabbi will create a cohesive Jewish educational vision for the organization and deepen the quality of our students’ experiences with Hillel. They will create imaginative spaces for Jewish learning and modern engagement with Jewish text through co-facilitation of learning fellowships and pioneering new educational opportunities. The rabbi works in collaboration with our student engagement team to embrace pluralism in reaching Jewish students of every background and empowers students to lead through NC Hillel’s student-led, staff-supported ethos. It is preferred that this role will be based in the Triangle to be accessible to the entire state. The expectation is that the rabbi’s time will be divided proportionally to address the statewide educational vision and programming, and the number of students served by each of our campuses.

We envision this role as a senior professional working under the supervision of the Managing Director.  This role values mutuality and reciprocity, focusing on collaboration and balanced partnerships on our deeply collaborative team.

What You’ll Do

Education

  • Pilot and scale new Jewish learning initiatives across all NC Hillel campuses. This may include opportunities such as Jewish learning shabbatons and cohort experiences.
  • Create opportunities for formal and informal Jewish learning in a variety of campus venues.
  • Serve as a thought leader and champion for Jewish learning among the professional team.
  • Infuse Jewish content into a range of media including online and social media spaces.

Jewish Practice

  • In consultation with the Managing Director and Director of NC Hillel Link, create a plan for rabbinic and spiritual leadership for all campuses served by NC Hillel.
  • Create innovative rituals in response to expressed student needs.
  • Foster a culture of fully realized Jewish pluralism that allows students to develop their own personal practice.

Community Partnership and Leadership

  • Build relationships with identity, culture, and faith-based groups on NC Hillel campuses.
  • Serve as a core partner with rabbinic and clergy leadership across the state.
  • Represent the NC Hillel community at greater Jewish communal events.
  • Create and scale the inaugural student Interfaith Fellowship Program for NC Hillel.

Student Engagement

  • Infuse elevated Judaic content and intentionality into student engagement and student leadership across all NC Hillel campuses.
  • Serve as a pastoral presence for campus communities.
  • Act as a visible Jewish role model.

What You’ve Accomplished

  • Rabbinic ordination from an accredited institution and a commitment to a pluralistic approach to Jewish life.
  • Strong organizational skills, adaptability, problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • A team-oriented approach and strong work ethic.
  • Proven experience thinking critically and acting strategically to reach goals.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Commitment to campus, students, and emerging Jewish leadership.
  • Enthusiasm for an immersive and collaborative team culture.
  • Proven success in community building and outreach, and previous experience in program visioning and implementation.
  • Ability to weave networks of connections between individuals and the richness of the Jewish tradition
  • Expertise in leading complex conversations about Judaism and Israel, meeting students at various points in their personal Jewish journeys.
  • Embrace of Jewish pluralism and acceptance of every student’s Jewish identity.

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the nonprofit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $90,000-110,000. This position is classified as exempt.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, life insurance, Long Term Disability (LTD), Flexible Spending Plan, generous vacation/sick time, and parental leave.
  • Independent and hands-on work in an exciting environment.
  • Outstanding professional development both individually and as a team.
  • Travel across North Carolina, nationally and to Israel.

About North Carolina Hillel

North Carolina Hillel serves students across the University of North Carolina System with staff strategically located across the state. Jewish students of all backgrounds come to NC Hillel to make friends in a warm, accepting environment and to explore what being Jewish means to them. For some students, it’s the first time they have a Jewish role model. For others, it’s the first time they’re exploring their Judaism on their own terms. Hillel @ NC State, NC Hillel Link (a consortium of campuses with smaller Jewish populations), and UNC Chapel Hill Hillel allow us to serve our students dynamically from the coast to the mountains.

We empower and inspire students to pursue their own Jewish journeys by creating strong communities and transformative experiences.

We aspire to cultivate within students a commitment to these core values:

  • Kehillah – Community: building relationships with Jews at home, in Israel, and around the world
  • Hachnasat Orchim – Hospitality: welcoming people from diverse backgrounds and creating a warm, pluralistic environment
  • Limmud – Learning: a lifelong pursuit of deeper understanding and Jewish learning
  • Ruchaniut – Spirituality: investigating religious questions and seeking personal growth and moral fulfillment
  • Tzedek – Justice: striving for a more just and righteous world

The Triangle, which includes Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham, is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the South, and routinely ranks at or near the top of “quality of life” lists. The vibrant Chapel Hill/Durham Jewish community includes seven congregations, a Jewish Community Center and The Sandra E. Lerner Jewish Community Day School (Pre-K -5th grade). Moreover, the Jewish Federations located in Chapel Hill-Durham, Raleigh-Cary, Greensboro, and Charlotte work together to form a strong connection across the state.

North Carolina Hillel is affiliated with Hillel International. Hillel International enriches the lives of Jewish students so they may enrich the Jewish people and the world and envisions a world where every student is inspired to make an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning and Israel.

** Anticipated start date of Summer 2025 **

About Hillel International

In 1923, Rabbi Benjamin Frankel started Hillel with humble means, a noble mission and a breathtaking vision: to convey Jewish civilization to a new generation. Today, Hillel International continues to enrich the lives of Jewish students and is the largest Jewish campus organization in the world at nearly 1,000 colleges and universities across North America and around the world. As Hillel evolves as an organization, the mission remains steadfast: to create lasting connections with every Jewish student that foster an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning, and Israel and train them to become the next Jewish leaders.

Hillel is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating an accepting and inclusive environment for all.
